New Energy Nexus Indonesia helped Yulia develop ocean wave energy converter technology (called Pendulum), which produces electricity for offshore fishing platforms which are currently powered by diesel generators. Located in the biggest archipelago in the world, Indonesia’s coastal communities depend on marine livelihoods. Their dispersed residential pattern makes access to the national grid expensive and difficult. Although there is ample opportunity to electrify rural areas by using off-grid renewable energy systems, Indonesia has no regulations that specifically opt for developing off-grid renewables. Pendulum’s innovation, a wave-based generator, aims to help provide endless energy access to fishermen and coastal communities living on isolated islands. Pendulum plans to deploy its innovations in the northern and southern coast of Java for a pilot in 2021. Supporting New Energy Nexus in Indonesia will help Pendulum finalize its design, then build and install one set to be mobilized in each of two different locations of the Java Sea, targeting intended users of offshore fishing platforms.
