Expanding Wave-based Energy Generation in Java

Organization New Energy Nexus
Realm Indomalaya

The Project Marketplace is organized by the major terrestrial realms divided into 14 biogeographical regions – N. America, Subarctic America, C. America, S. America, Afrotropics, Indomalaya, Australasia, Oceania, Antarctica, and the Palearctic realm, which coincides with Eurasia and is divided into Subarctic, Western, Central, Eastern, and Southern regions.

Category Energy Transition

There are five main project categories: Energy Transition focuses on renewable energy access and energy efficiency. Nature Conservation includes wildlife habitat protection and ecosystem restoration, as well as Indigenous land rights. Regenerative Agriculture supports farmers, ranchers and community agriculture. Climate Change covers global science efforts, climate adaptation, and social justice work.

Status ongoing

Seed indicates an early stage project that needs some level of support to develop into a larger funding proposal. Ongoing indicates any project that needs core programmatic funding. Urgent indicates a short-term project initiated in response to a natural disaster or other impending risk.

Funding Level $

A single $ indicates a small project requiring $50,000 or less.

Timeframe Ongoing

New Energy Nexus Indonesia helped Yulia develop ocean wave energy converter technology (called Pendulum), which produces electricity for offshore fishing platforms which are currently powered by diesel generators. Located in the biggest archipelago in the world, Indonesia’s coastal communities depend on marine livelihoods. Their dispersed residential pattern makes access to the national grid expensive and difficult. Although there is ample opportunity to electrify rural areas by using off-grid renewable energy systems, Indonesia has no regulations that specifically opt for developing off-grid renewables. Pendulum’s innovation, a wave-based generator, aims to help provide endless energy access to fishermen and coastal communities living on isolated islands. Pendulum plans to deploy its innovations in the northern and southern coast of Java for a pilot in 2021. Supporting New Energy Nexus in Indonesia will help Pendulum finalize its design, then build and install one set to be mobilized in each of two different locations of the Java Sea, targeting intended users of offshore fishing platforms.
